Apple reveals self-publishing for iBooks via iTunes Connect

In the midst of troubles signing up publishers for international distribution of iBooks, Apple has announced the decision to allow self-publishing via iTunes Connect for independent authors interested in distributing their content through iBooks.

The report comes from MacLife who claim to have received an email from Apple outlining the new iTunes Connect feature that allows anyone to self-publish their work as long as it meets certain standards. These “standards” are outlined in the image below. Before this new self-publishing functionality was implemented, independent writers had to receive an invitation code from the iBookstore.
Apple notes that authors must meet minimal sales requirements for specific markets before receiving payouts for their material. Apple is also working with third party iBooks aggregators and recommends authors unfamiliar with the standards outlined below or uncomfortable with the minimum sales requirements consider this option.

iBooks Self-Publishing Requirements:
– ISBNs for all titles you intend to distribute
– You must be able to deliver your book content in EPUB format, passing EpubCheck 1.0.5.

-Contain no manifested files

-U.S. tax ID

– Valid iTunes Store account with credit card

Apple is also working with third party iBooks aggregators and recommend authors unfamiliar with the standards above go that route to get their material in the iBooks store.
