Zune phone with Windows Mobile 7 to debut at MWC

Microsoft looks set to enter the smartphone fray by unveiling the "Zune Phone" at Mobile World Congress later this month according to a Spanish tech blog.

MuyComputer the blog in question, firmly believes that Microsoft's first ever phone will be presented to the world at the event in Barcelona.

Gizmodo talked to the blog editorial director Javier Pérez Cortijo who told them, "the Zune Phone presentation at Barcelona's Mobile World Congress 2010 is 100% confirmed."

Details revealed so far suggest that the device will be more Zune with a phone attached to it, rather than the other way around. It will apparently run on Windows Mobile 7, and will use NVidia’s Tegra chipset to deliver smooth media playback. Nvidia will apparently join Microsoft at its Mobile World Congress presentation to make the special unveiling.

MuyComputer adds that the Zune phone will sport a 480 x 272 touch screen, HDMI video out and will weigh in at around 2.4 ounces (70g).

Rumours of a "Zune phone" have intensified in recent works after further evidence of a Microsoft handset surfaced within Zune software coding.

Microsoft has previously dismissed the notion of a Zune phone, while Windows Mobile 7 which could be delayed until possibly 2011, may cast doubt over these latest handset claims.

It could of course all point to the more likely eventuality of Microsoft incorporating Zune support into Windows Mobile 7, while lending its design expertise to the creation of a WinMo 7 phone.

Whether the Zune phone turns up or not, we will be there at MWC to see what Microsoft does show off in Barcelona.
