A prerequisite of using Google Maps Navigation is that you need a constant connection with your wireless carrier.

But with Nokia Ovi Maps you do not have to worry about that anymore. Nokia’s Ovi Map client works just fine, both online and offline. It also comes packed with some advanced premium features such as traffic, weather, pedestrian walking mode, and voice-guided navigation.

You can download the Nokia Ovi Maps for free by following this link.

Prior to Nokia’s announcement yesterday of releasing a new version of Ovi Maps for its smartphones at no extra cost, these premium services were subscription services on most devices (with some devices having a lifetime license). This announcement helps Nokia towards their goal of making GPS navigation as standard on smartphones as the quality cameras they have provided on these devices for years.

Ovi Maps provide turn-by-turn navigation in 74 countries in 46 languages, traffic information in over 10 countries, and detailed maps for over 80 countries. Ten Nokia smartphones are supported at launch with this new free premium service offering, including the Nokia N97 mini, Nokia 5800 XM, Nokia E72, and Nokia X6. Support for more S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, 5th Edition, and Maemo devices will be rolling out in the future.

Executive Vice President of Nokia, Tero Ojanperä said that creating and maintaining a dynamic mapping and navigation service is not easy. He also said that the company is continually updating its mapping content and it specifically looks at 250 different attributes to collect data using cars driving around various cities around the world to verify information is correct.

“Google offers free car navigation in one country,” he said. “We offer it in 74 countries. We are truly global where others are not.”

Another important differentiator for Nokia is the free access to the Lonely Planet Travel guides.

Ojanperä also stated that Nokia’s service is better for wireless operators because the service and application consumes far less bandwidth than competing mapping navigation services, such as Google Maps and Google Navigation.

These services provided by Nokia are already giving Google Maps a huge competition and it surely is about to show an exponential growth with the Nokia Ovi Maps going free.
