Google launches Gesture Search app for Android 2.0

Fed up of mundane typing of search terms into your Motorola Milestone or Google Nexus One phone? Bored of voice search? Well Google has the solution for your Android finding needs – Gesture Search.

Available for free from the Android app store, the app allows users to search their phone contents by sketching letters on the touchscreen. Watch the hands-on video to your right to see for yourself.

Handwriting recognition is surprisingly fluid and the app searches contacts, installed applications, bookmark and music tracks. Users can edit a query by swiping horizontally: left to right erases the whole query, and right to left removes the last letter or space in the query.

The app runs on Android-powered devices running Android 2.0 or above, so is set to be a hit with the new HTC Desire and HTC Legend, assuming that Apple doesn’t succeed in banning them first.
