Details of the upcoming Dell Streak 7 – the 7-inch tablet version of Dell’s 5-inch Streak phone – have landed, pointing to a mixed bag of specs and a summer 2011 release date.
While Dell is also hard at work readying a Motorola XOOM-baiting 10-inch Streak, the smaller ‘7’ looks set to rival the Samsung Galaxy Tab, albeit with some caveats in terms of spec. The Streak 7 will benefit from a dual-core Nvidia Tegra processor, 16 or 32GB of storage, an 800×480 resolution display and a 1.3-Meg front facing cam (to match it’s top notch 5-Meg rear one), but the operating system may just let it down.
We all remember Google suggesting that Android 3.0 is the one best suited to tablets, as 2.2 and 2.3 are operating systems designed with phones in mind. It’ll come as a surprise then, that the Streak 7 is earmarked for the ageing Android 2.2 (FroYo). Dell claims that it’ll be able to receive OTA software updates – making it eligible for future Android versions – but we’d be surprised if it received the jump to 3.0 that it’ll need to really shine.
Little is known about the 10-inch Streak as yet, but we would expect that Dell will be arming that device with Android Honeycomb if it expects to combat both the XOOM and the iPad 2. The Streak 7 looks set to launch at around $400 (£251) this summer.
