On-the-go music downloads for Android phones are now a-go after the Amazon MP3 store launched its first mobile application on the Google-designed OS.
The store, which gives users access to over nine million DRM-free tracks from major record labels and independents alike, opened its doors for business today and is free to download from the Android Market.

The online shop, which can be accessed via WiFi or 3G is Android fans’ first alternative to the all-conquering iTunes Store which is currently available for the iPhone and iPod touch. Late last year Amazon launched an iPhone app, which unsurprisingly did not feature access to the MP3 store.
As well as offering a huge range of tracks and albums to Android users, Amazon MP3 is also decidedly cheaper than the Apple alternative with the top 100 songs selling from just 29p per track (compared to Apple’s starting price of 59p) and albums like Metallica’s selt-titled effort up for grabs for just £3.00.
