Although the company is still losing money on every PlayStation 3 console it sells, Sony has further cut production costs this year to just an $18 loss per machine.
The Blu-ray packing games console has struggled to generate a profit in its three years on the market, but hopes to further trim the price of making a PS3 in 2011, making it a money-spinner for the first time.

It was reported on launch that each of the original-design PS3 consoles cost Sony over $800 to build, meaning the few that they were managing to shift sold at a massive loss.
The new price and more aethetically pleasing PS3 Slim overhaul of last summer has encouraged more people to opt for the next-gen console, so Sony will hope those profit-making days arrive sooner rather than later
