Nintendo Wii hits record sales in December

After a far from storming year for the Nintendo's Wii it seems that we still can't get enough, with the company posting record sales in December.

- Concept consoles: What the future of gaming might look like

Unpreturbed by the likes of Xbox and its Project Natal and the slimmer PS3, 3.81 million Wii consoles were sold in North America last month, making it a record for most consoles sold in a single month. According to the NPD group that's 1.66 million more units than were sold the same time in 2008.

After a mid-year slump with sales dwindling of both the Wii and the DSi, the console has managed to win it back and sell almost three times as many units last month as either of the other two consoles.

Wii games remain hits too, even with the hype surrounding Modern Warfare 2 it couldn't knock Wii games of the chart. The top three selling games in December were New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2.82 million), Wii Fit Plus (2.41 million) and Wii Sports Resort (1.79 million) with Modern Warfare 2 for the Xbox 360 and PS3 coming in a poor fourth, selling 1.63 million and 1.12 million units.

It's not all bad news for the rest of the gaming world, the industry as a whole posted never seen before figures with a 4% rise in revenue in 12months.

Will we be seeing the same joy next year for Natal? We'd just be glad to see the darn thing in action.
