Halo: Reach multiplayer beta to go live May 3rd

Millions of Halo fans will have the opportunity to play the final installment in the legendary series, Halo: Reach, months before it is officially released, it was announced at X10 in San Francisco today.

A multiplayer beta for Halo: Reach will launch on May 3rd this year, with developers at Bungie hoping to use user feedback to fine tune the first person shooter before its official outing later this year.

- 20 Games to ruin your relationship

- 50 Best games franchises ever

- 20 Games that changed it all

In what was the biggest news to emerge from Microsoft's X10 expo, which showcases some of the biggest titles scheduled for launch in 2010, owners of Halo: ODST will be able to use that disc to access the new content (which is sure to send sales of that title through the roof).

Although Halo: Reach brings about the long-awaited climax to the franchise, it is in fact a prequel to the events of the first Halo game, with Bungie claiming to have taken all the best aspects from the previous releases and moulded them into one series-defining title

Other titles on show at X10 were the long-awaited mystery adventure Alan Wake, along with Fable 3,  DLC for Left for Dead 2, Capcom's zombie-ridden gorefest Dead Rising 2 and the latest game in Ubisoft's Tom Clancy series, Splinter Cell Conviction.

We've been talking to the developers and producers of all these titles here in San Francisco about the future of gaming on the Xbox, 3D and Project Natal so keep it locked to T3.com for more on that in the coming days.

The big question in San Francisco right now is whether can Halo Reach do for the Xbox in 2010 what Modern Warfare 2 did in 2009. May 3rd will give us our first real clues.
