Build the Ultimate White Box Server for under $2000 …

We build an amazing white box ESXi server for under $2000! True virtualization, real power, and best of all, you don’t have to overpay HP, Dell, IBM or anyone else to put it together for you. Darren and Matt grab the company credit card and show you how to do it too.

  2. I think I spent around $1200 on mine and that’s with a storage upgrade this past month with enterprise sata drives and a new larger case.

45w dual core AMD CPU + ASRock mobo
    8 Gb DDR2
3.25 TB of storage for VMs
    IDE drive for ESXi
Dual gigabit ethernet (Intel Pro 1000)
    Antec 300 Case
    Scythe S-Flex fans
    520w Corsair PSU
    4 port Sata controller

Most of my VMs are not heavily utilized (as they are at home) – I’ve had 16 VMs running with no issues at all 🙂

  3. ESXi install as an image and so you want it on a seperate drive (otherwise your VMFS partition gets wiped if you reinstall). RAID is really not required for ESXi installations (IMO) because the install is so fast and ever so easy.

Having said that, I gave up installing ESXi to a jump drive on my ESXi whitebox as the system would hang for some reason. But hey, most of my hardware is not supported, and now that I have returned to booting ESXi from a regular drive I have zero issues again 🙂

  4. I built an ESXi server for under 1500 CAD. Core i7-920, 6GB of OCZ RAM, 4x500GB Seagate 7200.12 HDD, Foxconn Renaissance motherboard, 750W Antec Earthwatt PSU.

    Nice isn’t it 😀

  5. Where is the Sense of putting the OS on a single flashdrive instead of some logical raid volume of about 5-10gigs ? IF 3ware is a real hardware based raid controller it should be no problem handling booting linux however the disks are stacked into the enclosure. so why seperate it to its own boot drive ?? there will be no fault tolerance with that. BTW: i prefer ICP VORTEX (aka Adaptec SATA Raid controllers). Audio Alarm, 100% linux support out of the box, great console/cli tools. great manuals

  6. nIce Video…….do some more Vm videos on i7

  7. Good shit guys.

  8. horrible quality?

  9. cuit guy …

  10. I love new builds!!!! More Hardware with the Software stuff!

  11. good show but not much hacking!!!

  12. “just fade to black”
    lol, darren failing

  13. I have that same Corsair TX650W powersupply powering my quad core desktop. I’ve had it for about 4 or 5 months and I LOVE IT! Nice choice!

  14. The asus P6T doesn’t have a built in card, hence no video output. The server doesn’t need a monitor once it’s setup, but I think it would be a challenge to install windows w/o output

  15. Nice episode, a little off; not the regular good old hacking but good.
Lmao when he put the bag on his head at the end.

  16. whats with the horrible quality?

  17. will this work for ESXi 4 ?

  18. why put in the graphic card for a server???
