Brits waste £13bn on unused mobile tariff content annually

British mobile phone users are paying over the odds for their tariff’s content as almost half of all inclusive minutes and texts go unused.

Research from moneysupermarket.com claims that the 45 per cent of unused free minutes and texts allowance wasted annually by the average adult is earning the mobile industry in excess of £13bn.

- Apple iPhone 4G to get May release?

- LG InTouch Max GW620 Android launched in the UK

Contract customers are the biggest wasters according to the price comparison website’s study, with the average pay monthly mobile user squandering 137 minutes every month or 27 hours a year along with 1,836 texts.

The poll of 2,005 adults showed that Pay As You Go customers are not entirely frugal with their inclusive content either, wasting 192 minutes and 348 texts on average each year.

Mike Wilson, manager of mobiles and broadband at moneysupermarket.com said: "It's great that consumers are under their monthly allowance to avoid any extra costs, but it's also important to get the most out of your contract for what you pay each month. One of the best ways to do this is to asses what your monthly usage is and find a contract that suits you best. You may find a much lower, cheaper tariff meets your needs."

Perhaps a result of users desperately trying to avoid astronomical additionational charges, the moral of this story seems to be either spend less or talk more, we know which option we would go for.
