Xbox Live is heading to mobile phones soon, Microsoft confirms, but it looks likely to only be available on handsets running Windows Mobile.
The function, to be known as Xbox Live Games, comes as no surprise to avid followers of Microsoft who noted the emergence of a recent job advert within the company targeting a Principal Program Manager with the responsibility to “drive the platform and bring Xbox LIVE enabled games to Windows Mobile”.
Having filled the role that “will focus specifically on what makes gaming experiences “LIVE Enabled” through aspects such as avatar integration, social interactions, and multi-screen experiences” speculation now falls to on what devices Xbox Live Games will be available.
An internal document from Microsoft marketing material dated December 2009 only lists Windows phones as compatible mobile formats with which to run Xbox Live Games, making no mention to Microsoft’s Zune.
However, all should become clear next month when Microsoft is expected to fully unveil Windows Mobile 7 to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
