Universal Games Controller may be launched soon

The invention copies the idea of universal remotes for different home entertainment kit such as TV and DVD players.

The US patent filing, which surfaced last week, is for a touchscreen LCD displaying the controls of the supported consoles.

And the patent isn’t limited to the three current dominant players – it’s also planned to be retro-compatible with old console layouts.

It goes on to list Amiga CD-32 controllers, Atari Jaguar controllers, Gravis Gamepad controllers, Sega controllers, and Turbographics controllers.

The universal controller would be able to store up to three schemes.

Controller data would be passed by way of a special receiver. The filing notes that the device could be loaded out with rumble functionality, as well as speakers.

It could also be powered either by battery for wireless gameplay or by way of the communication receiver.

No word from Sony when the controller will see light but as the patents were filed two years ago, it shouldn't be too long now.
