Qualcomm Mirasol Display : Colour e-ink tech hands-on

Qualcomm held its annual IQ event in London this morning, celebrating 25 years of work in the wireless technology biz. The event wasn’t all about the chipsets and processors that now inhabit millions of smartphones, though, as Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs was keen to talk about some of the new technology the company is looking into.

Among them was Mirasol, the company’s foray into e-ink displays, which uses the same principles as found in nature with butterfly wings’ interferometric modulation to display colour. Whereas backlit displays are in a struggle with the light around them – and often prove hard to see in natural light as a result – Mirasol harnesses it, resulting in colour images that are just as readable in daylight as any current e-reader.

The benefit is colour video and images that load quickly and efficiently without draining power as much as LCD or OLED displays, and an impressive battery life as long as e-readers such as the Amazon Kindle.

This is only at the prototype stage at present, and the two devices Qualcomm demoed won’t be getting released, but take a look at our hands-on pics to see the tech in action under a variety of lighting. It was mighty impressive. See the offical video below for an explanation of the tech invovled:
