iPhone hacker breaks into Sony PlayStation 3

The Sony PlayStation 3 console has been successfully hacked for the first time, according to the teenager who first crow-barred his way into the Apple iPhone.

US-based hacker George Hotz says that it took him five-weeks to unlock the PS3 hardware enabling him to run copied games and custom software on the Sony entertainment hub. This is believed to be the first time anyone has cracked the PS3, despite it being on the market for three years now.

Hotz told BBC News: "It's supposed to be unhackable, but nothing is unhackable. I can now run anything I want on the system. It's like having an awesome new power - I'm just not sure howe to wield it."

Hotz first made the headlines in 2007 when, at the tender ago of 17, he discovered a way into the Apple iPhone before posting his methods online. He says he intends to do the same with the PS3 hack, once he has refined his technique.

Sony is currently investigating the report.
