A site a frequent is Fishki.net which hosts various interesting images that are always entertaining to watch. A lot of the typed text provides details about a particular image and explains any ambiguities. People respond to these pictures in the comments section making the website one type of a board. Unfortunately none of the text on the site is in English. I can enjoy the images by looking at them but I cannot read an image’s details or the comments left by other visitors.
Whenever I come across non-English texts on Fishki.net which I consider worth understanding, I head on over to Google Translate. There I can paste the text, choose the language it is in, choose the output language, and simply click TRANSLATE.
Recently I started looking for a shorter way to get my text translated; anything that would do the job without having me leave the current webpage. I use Chrome and ‘extensions’ came to mind. Sure enough, Google Translate had an extension (which can be gotten here) which does the job easily.
Like most Chrome extensions, when you install Translate, it creates its icon in your Chrome address bar.
The way it works from here on is as user-friendly as it can get: if you are on a non-English webpage, simply click on this address bar icon of Translate and the entire webpage will be translated. The language of the webpage is automatically detected by Translate.
Translate actively monitors your webpage in the sense that it compares the webpage’s language to your default Chrome language. If you open a webpage of a language that is not set in Chrome as default, automatically Translate will present the option to translate the website. This option will be shown right under your bookmarks toolbar.
This extension can be improved if there was an option to translate selected/highlighted text; this would save taken to translate an entire webpage when all that is really wanted is a portion of the text to be translated.
Overall the Google Translate extension for Chrome is a wonderful tool for benefitting from websites which are in languages we cannot read; do what I did and get this extension for your Chrome to get the most of out of your internet experience.
