Steve Jobs has officially confirmed via email that Apple has plans to implement support for AirPlay streaming from Safari and third-party apps sometime in 2011. The following email exchange (image above) between Jobs and a MacRumors reader provides the proof:
Q: Hi, I recently updated both my iPhone 4 and iPad to 4.2. I think my favourite feature is airplay. This is seriously amazing and makes sharing content seamless. I just purchased Apple TV and was wondering are you ever going to make airplay video work for videos in safari and 3rd party apps? I hope to get a response. 🙂
A: Yep, hope to add these features to Airplay in 2011.
When Apple released iOS 4.2.1, the latest update for iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch, it included ‘AirPlay’, which brought the ability to stream content from iOS devices to network connected Apple TVs. However, most people were disappointed that the feature was limited to streaming audio only for Safari and third-party apps, leaving only the iPod.app and YouTube.app with full support.
While there are solutions such as AirVideoEnabler and AllPlay that enable the feature in third-party apps, this is currently only useful to those willing to jailbreak their device.
