Just as soon as they were announced, they we quickly taken away. The second biggest PC maker, Acer recently announced they were coming out with v a line of Android tablets. A 7in and 10in tablet were originally slated to be released either later this year or early Q1 of 2011. Now Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci has put the brakes on that.
Just last week Acer was said to have a Android 2.2 tablet ready to roll this year, but after some thought Acer CEO has decided to wait for the Android 3.0 Honeycomb release instead. Regarding the Android 2.2 and Android 2.3 based tablet, the company is “not convinced it is the right solution.”
In a recent interview, Lanci said, “We could have an Android tablet already with Froyo. We took the decision to wait for Honeycomb when it is available.” Acer believes that Froyo tablet or a Gingerbread powered tablet would not be the ideal entry into the ever crowed tablet market.
In bold statement after the original unveiling, Lanci went on the record to say that Acer tablets would overtake the iPad in 2-3 years time. He expected Acer to get 10 to 20 percent of the market shortly after the initial release, and expects to take the lead from Apple’s iPad later on.
Acer also believes that there are other tablet solutions aside from Android. The company has plans for a Meego based product in joint partnership with Nokia and Intel. We can excpect a launch for that product sometime in the second half of 2011.
If that wasn’t enough for you, Lanci said the company plans to make a Windows Phone 7 powered device. ”If we look at Windows Phone 7, today, I think we see the same opportunity you can see on Android in terms of customization.” says Lanci.
So there is whole lot to look forward to from Acer, who is usually known for PC’s, but now wants to make a name for themselves in the mobile market.
