3D Version of Nintendo DS to be Unveiled at E3

The NewYorkTimes reported yesterday that Nintendo plans to release a new version of their handheld Nintendo DS with 3-D display capabilities called the Nintendo 3DS. While this is obviously not that big of a shock seeing that so many technology companies are considering the possibilities of 3D technology with the success that movies such as Avatar have had in 3D theatres, its quite surprising they made the announcement prior to E3.  An interesting piece of info about the device, although their wasn’t really all that much in the article and announcement, is the fact that the device will not require you to wear 3D glasses in order to take advantage of it’s 3D capabilities. The Times reports that the device will go on sale sometime during the company’s next fiscal year between April1, 2010, and March 31, 2011. Chief spokesman of Nintendo spoke about the announcement in a press release,

“We wanted to give the gaming industry a head’s up about what to expect from Nintendo at E3,” said Ken Toyoda, chief spokesman at Nintendo. “We’ll invite people to play with the new device then.”
